About Mart Visser Artworks

Although Mart Visser is best known for his work as a couturier, he has also been active as an artist for years. He creates sculptures and paintings intuitively and experiments with formats and use of materials. As with his modernist fashion design, structure, relief, texture and technology strengthen the design.

Ever since Mart Visser could hold a pencil or brush, he has been drawing heads, heads and facial expressions. The expression of the face in all its forms is what fascinates him. For him, the power of a personality creates the individual on the canvas. Visser is inspired by his encounters and gives free rein to his intuition. He starts with a blank canvas; not knowing what it will be. Structure, relief, craft and technology strengthen the design. Mart Visser applies the same ingredients in his artwork, sculptures, paintings and installations. The rough and abstract design that Visser creates is in stark contrast to the modernist and fine lines of his haute couture. The color palette and dynamic diversity of materials are the only overlaps with his collections. Night blue, gradations in black/white/gray, dark orange, ocher and a parade of grayed tones.

The artist makes sculptures from heavy materials, rough woods, stones and iron; with a love for old, weathered materials. He stacks, models with weight and forms fascinating objects. These works of art are then grouped with a musical feeling, in a rhythm, as an installation.

“As a spectator you surround yourself with the silence that the person radiates on a canvas; you become absorbed in it, so to speak. I also look at a person this way; the contours, wrinkles and division of the face. A single change in a line immediately changes the look or expression of the face. The print of a face or the play with shadows so that the contours of the face are only partially visible; Only then does an image become interesting to me.”
